EAST DALLAS VELOWAY

The East Dallas Veloway (also called the Santa Fe Trail in some parts) is a new part of the Dallas trail system that will connect Randall Park to White Rock Lake, and then south to Fair Park.

FUNDING
Cost of constructing the trail will be paid for using a combination of state and local funds.  Phase 1 is funded by City of Dallas-CMAQ funds and Phase 2 by Texas Department of Transportation STEP funds.  This leg of the trail all the way to Fair Park is paid for.

SCHEDULE
The construction of Phase 1 of the East Dallas Veloway is expected to begin in August 2009 and complete in August 2010. The construction plans are being submitted to TXDOT for final review in Austin and the construction letting is scheduled for May 2009, pending final review of plans, and issuance of a “design exemption” from TXDOT for the low clearance of the existing bridge spanning Winsted Drive.

Because this project is funded by the Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program (STEP), it must be reviewed and authorized by TxDOT prior to advertising for construction to ensure federal funding eligibility. TxDOT will issue a State Letter of Authority (LOA) as their approval for construction after environmental clearance is obtained, TxDOT approves construction plans, and all issues are resolved.  (Updated 2/10/2009 from Alan Hendrix, Asst. Dir. of Public Works & Transportation)
